You Always Wanted to Know About...

...the West Virginia Core Coursework Transfer Agreement!

A longstanding policy at the state level, the WV CCTA allows courses from broad general studies categories (social science, mathematics, lab sciences, etc.) to substitute for our own General Studies requirements, with some limitations based on specific GS requirements in particular majors (for example, we do not substitute lab sciences for students in Nursing, which specifies the CHEM 120/122 sequence for GS lab science).

Though the HEPC policy is written specifically for courses transferred from WV institutions, it has long been institutional practice to extend that flexibility to the large population of students transferring from out-of-state institutions as well.

For many years under this policy, transfer work would routinely be posted to the Shepherd University record as a completely different course, in order to allow such general studies substitutions. For example, an American History course being transferred in might have been posted as HIST 101, to allow it to "stand in for" the given GS requirement. Often, however, such mislabeling created more problems for the student (and confusion for the advisor) than it was intended to solve!

However, several semesters back, we revised the articulation process so that transfer work is posted, as often as possible, as the actual equivalent Shepherd course. (As older students move through to graduation, you will see fewer and fewer of the old "mislabeled" courses on the transcripts.)

At this time, appropriate GS substitutions under the WV CCTA are set in place by one of two methods:

1) By applying a direct departmental or administrative substitution (look for "SUB" out on the right margin of Degree Evaluation); or
2) By applying a special code that identifies the broad GS category for which a course may substitute (SO for social sciences, LS for lab sciences, MA for mathematics, etc.).
