New Catalog Adoptions

Since the opening of the fall 2011 semester, almost 400 continuing spring 2012 students have, in consultation with their advisors, made the switch to the 2011 catalog and the revised curriculum. Interestingly, there has been as much movement among upper-division students as for students in the lower division:

Freshman

Sophomore

Junior

Senior

Grand Total

36

164

104

95

399

Older students moving to the new catalog will often require additional interventions to ensure that their coursework (earned prior to the existence of Core Codes, etc.) will work in the new curriculum. Our office generates a degree evaluation report, reviewing the detail requirements and non-program elective areas to identify where Core Codes need to be "back-loaded" into the student course record. In this manner, we enable degree evaluation to "see" the courses as satisfying those areas in the Core Curriculum that are looking for the specific codes.

This has been painstaking work, and we appreciate the vigilance of advisors who are reviewing the results with us and can alert us when (as will occasionally happen) we have missed a code. Particularly in those cases where it is allowing a student to graduate in more timely fashion, we consider the additional detail work well worth the effort, and hope that you agree!

A reminder to advisors: please watch for those instances where the new curriculum and Core have a more stringent grading standard for a course the student may already have earned. In some cases, continuing students who have earned a D in ENGL 101 or 102/103/104 are being surprised by the minimum C requirement in the new Core Curriculum. The General Studies Committee has declared that these students must adopt in full the new requirements, meaning that in some cases the student will be required to repeat a course for a better grade.
