THINGS TO REMEMBER...

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy
In order for students to remain academically eligible for most federal, state, and institutional aid programs, they must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress. The U.S. Department of Education requires that students be measured both qualitatively and quantitatively. Shepherd policy is outlined below. Students may appeal their status to the Financial Aid Office provided there are extenuating circumstances that are fully documented.

Standards Measured By GPA
All students pursuing a bachelorıs degree must meet the following requirements:

Credit Hours Attempted  Cumulative GPA
1.75 minimum
25 + 2.0 (4.0 scale)

All students seeking a masterıs degree must maintain a minimum 2.25 cumulative GPA.

Students who pass fewer than 12 hours and/or have less than a 1.0 cumulative GPA after the first two semesters of attendance will not be given a probationary period and financial aid eligibility will be suspended.

Students admitted or readmitted on academic probation may not meet GPA standards.

Standards Measured by Hours Attempted
All undergraduate students must pass at least 70 percent of the credit hours attempted. This includes stretch model, foundations, and pass/fail classes.

All graduate students must pass at least 80 percent of the credit hours attempted.

Attempted hours are combined with all passing grades in determining progress. Attempted hours include the following:

F Failure
I Incomplete
IF Incomplete/Failure
W Withdraw
R Repeat

All students in programs leading to a bachelorıs degree must complete the program within 192 attempted hours.

It is strongly recommended that students limit withdrawing from classes.

PROMISE Scholarship
Standards have increased for high school students to receive PROMISE for the class of 2007.

ACT: Student must have a minimum composite score of 22 with minimum subject scores of 20 in each of the four areas: math, science, English, and reading.

Or

SAT: Student must have a minimum 1020 combination of critical reading and math with a minimum of 490 in critical reading and 480 in math.

ACT or SAT scores cannot be combined from multiple test administrations.

In addition, the ACT or SAT writing portion will NOT be used in calculating minimum composite scores for the PROMISE scholarship.

Renewal Requirements Remain Constant
PROMISE recipients must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA throughout their collegiate career. However, first-year students can retain the scholarship if they receive a cumulative 2.75, but every year thereafter, students must meet the minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA requirement. Students must complete and earn 30 credit hours per academic year and maintain full-time status (12 credit hours) each semester. Any college credit, as well as the GPA for those credits, earned prior to the actual enrollment in college does not count toward the studentıs renewal eligibility for the scholarship. Only those credits and grades earned while the student is a PROMISE Scholar count for purposes of determining renewal eligibility.

PROMISE does not pay for summer school. If a student falls short of either the GPA or credit hour requirement, he/she can attend summer school to meet renewal eligibility, but it will be at the expense of the student.

Important Facts
Financial aid recipients who withdraw on or before October 24, 2006, will owe a portion of their financial aid back to the federal and/or state programs. The institution will repay their debt for them so that they can enroll the next term; however, they will owe Shepherd University. If a student who began attendance does not officially withdraw and fails to earn a grade in at least one course, he/she is considered to have unofficially withdrawn. He/she will owe a return of funds. An F is considered earned. December graduates need to complete exit counseling if they have ever borrowed on any loan program throughout their collegiate career. This can be accomplished at www.dlservicer.ed.gov and should be completed before graduation to avoid a hold on transcripts.
