About the Shepherd University Podcast Series: The Spirit of Black History Month

In this podcast series, you’ll hear from people whose voices reflect the spirit of Black History Month on the local, national, and, even, international level. They range from the Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Policy for the NAACP to the Navy’s first female African American intelligence officer. They’re the voices of thought, experience and passion: a passion they share with you.

Q. Who was involved in the podcast project?
A. The project was launched by the University’s Multicultural Student Affairs and Disability Support Services. Shepherd students conducted all aspects of the project, from inviting guests to producing the podcasts, under the direction of media consultant and host, Susan Benjamin.

Q. How did you pick the guests?
A. We received almost a hundred pitch letters from publicists who learned about our project. We also relied on our knowledge of key players in the African American scene and, of course, key voices from within the University.

Q. What was the biggest surprise you encountered through these interviews?
A. We knew that Black History Month was about the trials, traumas, and victories of the African American people. But we were surprised at how profound the spirit of Black History Month really is. It’s about people getting closer to one another in the deepest possible sense…and getting closer to their selves. In the best, most universal application of the word, it’s about love.
