Becoming involved

Shepherd University Theater is always looking for people interested in joining us on productions.  Shepherd offers a theater minor, but anyone can be involved in the shows, you don't have to be a minor.  Additionally, Shepherd Theater offers both upper and lower level classes (3 Credits) for participation in either acting or tech that can satisfy requirements for most Shepherd Majors electives needs.

Shepherd Theater always welcomes participation by members of the general public as well.  Please contact us at 304-876-5447 or by email at pwallace@shepherd.edu

Theater Participation can be a major time commitment, so we want to use this opportunity to lay out some of the basics so that you can make informed decisions about your level of participation:

Acting and Stage Management:

This is the most time intensive part of our process.  In general, we rehearse 4 hours a night Monday to Friday from 6-10pm and on on Saturday from noon to 6 pm.  Rehearsals last 6 weeks and the run of the show is 3 weeks.  Shows run Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm to 11pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm.  Essentially, this will take up one half a semester, usually the beginning until Midterms.  Acting positions require an audition and casting by the show director.  Stage Management requires starting as an Assistant Stage Manager for at least one production.

Technician:

There are two parts to this area, one is the running of the shows and the other is the building of the shows.  Run crew members are with the show for 4 weeks including first viewing, tech, show run and strike.  Shows run Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm to 11pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm.  The first week of viewing and tech is the most involved: Monday to Friday is 6pm to midnight, Saturday is 9am to midnight, and Sunday is noon to 10pm.  Technicians are required to strike and restore the show on the final Saturday from Close until Midnight and the following Sunday from noon to 6pm.

Build Technicians can include any of the crews (sound, lights, Scenery, Paints, etc) that actually create and install the items for the show.  These people may, but are not required, to run the shows as well.  Build Technicians set up times during the week that they come in to the shops and perform the jobs with the crew head.  These hours can be set up for each technician and crew head based around free hours.  Build technicians are required to strike and restore the show on the final Saturday from Close until Midnight and the following Sunday from noon to 6pm.  Build technicians will also assist in the final cleanup and restore of the theater.  Once the show is over, build technicians continue to meet during the determined time to finish space cleanups, start build for next show, or assist in regular theater operations.

Box Office, Usher

The shortest of our time requirements, Box office and ushering are not available for credit at this time, but can be combined with Build Technician duties if credit is desired.  This is a great way to become involved and check us out without a major time commitment.  Box Office personnel and ushers work for the run of the show from 7pm to 9:30pm on Wednesday through Saturday, and Sunday from 1pm to 3:30pm.  We ask that people in these positions dress nicely and be prepared to interact with the general public.

Designer

All areas of the productions have designers-Costumes, lights, Sound, Set, Etc.  If you are interested in this, please contact us directly so for further discussion.
