Personal Health Record (PHR) Systems

in West Virginia

The Governor’s HealthyWV Strategic Plan continues moving West Virginia forward on a path to a healthier future. It includes a call for all West Virginians to be informed and active partners in taking care of their own health. This will require extensive collaboration between the public and private sector and our citizens.

Over the next 10 years, healthcare organizations large and small will complete their transition to the use of comprehensive health information systems that include both electronic medical record (EMR) and personal health record (PHR) systems.

The personal health record (PHR) is different from an electronic medical record (EMR) system maintained by a healthcare provider organization. The PHR is maintained by the individual patient. These individuals own and manage the information in the PHR, which comes from both multiple healthcare providers and the individuals themselves.

The following are links to a few key Personal Health Record (PHR) web based solutions that are beginning to be used by citizens in West Virginia and other states across the country. These include both commercial and open source/public domain solutions. Check them out and see if one of these or others in the marketplace meet your personal needs.

Consumers should take the time to understand the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of PHR providers.
