Public Health Collaborative IT Projects & Activities The following are brief descriptions of just some of the many collaborative projects, activities, and organizations focused on Public Health and BioSurveillance information systems. Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network - The World Health Organization has established the
Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), a technical collaboration
of existing institutions and networks who pool human and technical resources
for the rapid identification, confirmation and response to outbreaks of
international importance. http://www.who.int/csr/outbreaknetwork/en/ National Electronic
Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) - NEDSS is an initiative that promotes the use of data and
information system standards to advance the development of efficient,
integrated, and interoperable surveillance systems at federal, state and
local levels. It is a major component of the Public Health Information
Network (PHIN). Visit http://www.cdc.gov/nedss/
Real-Time Outbreak and Disease Surveillance (RODS)
- The RODS Laboratory is a
collaboration between researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and the
Auton Lab in Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science.
It was founded in 1999 to investigate methods for real-time detection and
assessment of disease outbreaks. Visit http://www.health.pitt.edu/rods/ WHO HealthMap - The Public
Health Mapping and GIS Programme has become a global partnership involving
the WHO, member countries, infectious disease programs, research institutes,
and the private sector. The Public Health Mapping and GIS programme has
developed tools and applications allowing the global partners to respond to
critical information needs of infectious disease and public health programs.
These tools are based on recent advances in GIS technologies, mapping and
remote field data collection tools such as hand-held global positioning
systems, mobile mapping units and Internet connectivity. See http://www.who.int/csr/mapping/en/ Some other examples of collaborative Public Health
IT organizations, projects and activities include: ·
