Health Information Exchange (HIE) Solutions

The following are brief descriptions of just some of the many collaborative projects, activities, and organizations focused on Health Information Exchange (HIE) systems. The primary focus of these projects is on open source solutions.

Connecting For Health - Connecting for Health is a public-private collaborative designed to address the barriers to development of an interconnected health information infrastructure. Connecting For Health was created by the Markle Foundation. More than 100 leading private and public organizations are now collaborating on this initiative. Visit http://www.connectingforhealth.org/

eHealth Initiative - eHealth Initiative is an independent, non-profit organization which brings together multiple stakeholders to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare through the use of information and information technology (IT). It has focused its growing set of resources and tools to support states, regions and communities across the nation who are engaged in establishing health information exchange (HIE) solutions. See  http://www.ehealthinitiative.org/

Federal Health Information Exchange (FHIE) - The Federal Health Information Exchange (FHIE) program is a federal government health IT initiative aimed at facilitating the secure electronic one-way exchange of patient medical information between the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The success of this initiative has given rise to a new project called the Bidirectional Health Information Exchange (BHIE) project.  This project offers a two-way exchange of clinical information between the participating agencies.  Visit http://www1.va.gov/vadodhealthitsharing/page.cfm?pg=13

Massachusetts Health Data Consortium (MAHD) and the New England Health EDI Network (NEHEN)One of the goals of the MAHD consortium is to improve the region's health care information infrastructure by fostering the growth of a variety of health information networks, building on systems already in place, while encouraging collaboration and standardization among these networks. The MAHD coalition helped develop the New England Health EDI Network (NEHEN), a secure and innovative electronic-commerce solution for reducing administrative costs in health care. See http://www.nehen.org/

National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) -  NEDSS is an initiative that promotes the use of data and information system standards to advance the development of efficient, integrated, and interoperable surveillance systems at federal, state and local levels.  It is a major component of the Public Health Information Network (PHIN). The vision of NEDSS is to have integrated surveillance systems that can transfer appropriate public health, laboratory, and clinical data efficiently and securely over the Internet.
