Emerging Technologies The following are some of the emerging technologies and innovative solutions that will have a major impact on healthcare in the coming decade(s). o Trusted EHR & HIE Solutions By 2020, thousands of community level Health
Information Exchanges (HIE) will exist, and will be interconnected to form a National
Health Information Network (NHIN) across the United States. These HIEs will
be trusted, standards based networks used to interconnect Electronic Health
Record (EHR) systems. The bottom line, however, is that HIE capabilities and
the development of an NHIN are dependent on the widespread implementation and
use of EHR systems. o Public Health, Biosurveillance, the NHIN
Grid, and the Next Generation Internet By
2020, public health information systems such as disease registries will be integrated
into the NHIN grid running on the Next Generation Internet - Internet 2. Increased EHR adoption across the
U.S. and around the world will support these increasingly computerized disease registries needed for
biosurveillance. o
Free
and Open Source Software (FOSS) By the year 2020, FOSS software will have achieved greater than 50%
market share in most classes of software across the enterprise and in homes
across the U.S. In countries
such as China, India and much of the developing world, FOSS will be the
dominant software used. o
Mobile@AnywhereHealth
Information Systems By the year 2020, due to technological advances and the demands of a very mobile workforce, wireless will be the dominant connectivity infrastructure, especially in the healthcare arena.. o
Nanotechnology,
Nanomedicine and HIT Systems Nanotechnology will continue to revolutionize almost every industry, including healthcare over the coming decade. Nanotechnology will lead to new generations of prosthetic and medical implants. The linkage of these nano diagnostic, drug delivery, or implant devices to a patient care information system and electronic health record (EHR) systems will become very real possibilities. By 2020, the use of robots will have become a routine part of healthcare. Up to 30% of all minimally invasive surgery will be performed robotically. In this next decade, we will see a wide array of more sophisticated robotic devices being used to collect and feed clinical data into the EHR o
Hybrid
Solar Powered Health IT Systems By 2020, a significant number of healthcare organizations around the world will have begun to acquire and deploy "hybrid" energy systems that tap into renewable solar and wind energy sources along traditional electrical energy sources to support their IT infrastructure and overall facility energy needs. A few other emerging technologies that will find
widespread use in healthcare by 2020 include: o Personal
Health Record (PHR) Systems o Genomic Information Systems & Biorepositories o Complementary
& Alternative Medicine (CAM) & EHRs
