Health IT Architecture & Standards

 

The following are brief descriptions of some of the many collaborative projects, activities, and organizations with a focus on health IT architecture and open standards.

 

Health Level Seven (HL7)

Health Level Seven (HL7) is one of several American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited Standards Developing Organizations (SDO) operating in the healthcare arena. it is a not-for-profit volunteer organization. Its members consist of healthcare providers, vendors, payers, consultants, government groups and others. Their aim is to develop and advance the clinical and administrative standards for healthcare information systems.

 

Federal Health Architecture (FHA) eGov Initiative

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) has partnered with 23 other federal agencies and/or departments involved in healthcare on a multi-year Federal eGov initiative to identify and adopt health IT standards. These activities are coordinated through the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) http://healthit.hhs.gov/portal/server.pt 

 

Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED)

SNOMEDŽ International is a division of the College of American Pathologists (CAP).  SNOMED is a dynamic and sustainable, scientifically validated terminology and infrastructure that enables clinicians, researchers and patients to share health care knowledge worldwide, across clinical specialties and sites of care. Developed in collaboration with the U.K. National Health Service, SNOMED CT’s controlled healthcare terminology includes comprehensive coverage of diseases, clinical findings, therapies, procedures, and outcomes. SNOMED CT is considered to be the most comprehensive multilingual clinical reference terminology available in the world.
