‘Open Source’ Electronic Health Record (EHR) Solutions

The use of Open Source Software (OSS) solutions by healthcare providers and organizations is an increasingly important trend today. The number of OSS solutions currently available has grown to be quite substantial. The number of new OSS healthcare solutions under development is equally impressive. The following are links to some of the more notable open source EHR solutions.

o AMPATH Medical Record Systems (AMRS) – AMPATH, also known as OpenMRS, is an international open source project that has built a scalable, flexible electronic medical record EMR system built on open standards. Visit www.amrs.iukenya.org and http://openmrs.org/wiki/

o ClearHealth - ClearHealth claims to be the first Free and Open Source (FOSS) Practice Management System to address the big five features: Medical Billing, Medical Accounts Recievable, Scheduling, Access Control, and EMR Visit http://www.clear-health.org

o FreeMed – FreeMED is Open Source practice management and an electronic and computer records system. It allows the tracking of medical data, in detail, with preservation not just of the diagnosis but the reasons for medical encounters. See www.freemed.org

o VistA / RPMS / OpenVistA - VistA is a comprehensive Health Information Technology System used by the Veterans Health Administration, which is the largest health care system in the United States. The entire VistA information technology system is available in the public domain – over 140 software modules of infrastructure and applications. o CARE2X - is an international Open Source Software initiative for hospitals and health care organizations to integrate existing information systems into one single efficient health information system. CARE2X has won several awards including the 2003 Linux Medical News Achievement Award, and PHP architect 2003 grant award. It is available under the GPL license. See http://www.care2x.com

o Open Source Clinical Applications & Resources (OSCAR) - OSCAR is an open source web-based electronic patient record system for delivery of evidence resources at the point of care. The software was developed under the auspices of the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The system has been deployed at several Canadian community health centers. It is available under the GNU Public License (GPL).
