SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Students at Shepherd University collected 1,765 pounds of food for the Jefferson County Community Ministries food pantry during a Homecoming food drive competition sponsored by the Homecoming Committee.

Nine student organizations competed to see which could collect the most nonperishable food based on weight. They received bonus points for creatively displaying the food with a 90s theme in the Ram’s Den before the food was weighed.

Sigma Sigma Sigma social sorority won the competition with more than 600 pounds of food collected; Alpha Sigma Tau social sorority came in second; and Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity was third. The theme for the winning display was Smells Like Shepherd Spirit (based on Nirvana’s song “Smells Like Teen Spirit”). Sigma Sigma Sigma members arranged the food to duplicate Ram Stadium, complete with three members of Nirvana in attendance. Alpha Sigma Tau’s display had a Spice Girls theme, and Alpha Phi Omega based its display on Pokémon.

Other organizations that competed were Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, Tau Kappa Epislon fraternity, Delta Zeta sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota women’s music fraternity, the Black Student Union, and the Shepherd Veterans Organization.

Homecoming activities continue at Shepherd through Saturday. For more information, visit www.shepherd.edu/news/homecoming-activities-planned-for-october-17-22/.
