The Sociology Program offers a variety of opportunities for students to experience in-the-field aspects of the discipline through internships, co-ops, field trips, and assorted professional activities.
Sociology internships for three credit hours and co-ops for three to nine credit hours are offered most semesters. Among the organizations sponsoring these interns: Massanutten Military Academy, and the Fauguier Family Guidance Services in Virginia; Manito, a program for at risk children and families in Gettysburg, PA; ESCAPE, a child abuse prevention program in Frederick MD; FOCUS of Charles Town, WV; Telemon of Martinsburg, WV; Project Excel of Shepherdstown, WV; Community Prevention Partnership of Martinsburg, WV; and Pressman Wildlife Services of Gerrardstown, WV.
Criminal Justice internships and co-ops have been arranged with city police departments in Martinsburg, Charles Town, Ranson, and Shepherdstown, WV; the sheriff's departments of Jefferson, Berkeley, Grant and Hampshire counties, also in West Virginia; the city police department of Frederick, MD; and the sheriff's department of Loudon county, VA.
In juvenile corrections, internships are hosted by the Northeastern Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, VA; and the Eastern Panhandle Juvenile Justice Center in Martinsburg, WV. Interns have served in adult corrections with the Eastern Panhandle Regional Jail in Martinsburg, WV, and in three state correctional systems in Maryland, i.e. Roxbury, the Maryland Correctional Training Center and the Maryland Correctional Institute, all of Hagerstown. The victims' assistance programs in both Berkeley and Jefferson counties are additional options for internships and co-ops. The executive and judicial probation and parole centers in the Eastern Panhandle also sponsor interns and co-op students. Numerous other local, state, and federal criminal justice systems at various times ask for intern assistance in their programs, including the Division of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
