The Sociology Program offers a variety of opportunities for the student to experience numerous aspects of the discipline. Among these opportunities are (1) Internships and Co-ops (2) a sociology club (3) an Honors society, (40 presentation and various field trips of interest, and (5) a research conference trip. Internships & Co-ops. Organizations from the four states make up these opportunities. Internships of three hours credit and Co-Ops where one can be paid to obtain from three to nine hours credit are offered most semesters. Some of the organizations sponsoring these Sociology Interns are: Massanutten Military Academy, and the Fauguier Family Guidance Services in Virginia; Manito, a program for at risk children and families in Gettysburg, PA; ESCAPE, a child abuse prevention program in Frederick MD and from West Virginia, FOCUS of Charles Town, Telemon of Martinsburg, Project Excel of Shepherdstown, Community Prevention Partnership of Martinsburg, and Pressman Wildlife Services of Gerrardstown Organizations sponsoring criminal justice internships and Co-Ops are: The West Virginia city police departments of Martinsburg, Charles Town, Ranson, and Shepherdstown; the sheriff’s departments of Jefferson, Berkeley, Grant and Hampshire counties; the city police department of Frederick, MD; and the sheriff’s department of Loudon county. In juvenile corrections, internships take place at the Northeaster regional Juvenile Detention Center in Winchester, VA: and the Eastern Panhandle Juvenile Justice Center in Martinsburg, WV and in adult correction, the Eastern Panhandle Regional Jail in Martinsburg, WV; and three state correctional systems in Maryland, Roxbury, the Maryland Correctional Training Center and the Maryland Correctional Institute, all of Hagerstown. The victim’s assistance programs of the prosecutor’s office in both Berkeley and Jefferson County participate in the internship/Co-Op program. Both the executive and judicial probation and parole centers in the Eastern Panhandle participate in the program along with the Public Defenders office. Also numerous other local, state, and Federal Criminal Justice systems at various times ask for intern assistance in their programs, recently the division of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the US Department of the Treasury has sponsored an intern. |
