Suggested Course Sequence

For completing a Sociology Major

In order to graduate from Shepherd University with a Major in Sociology, a minimum of 128 semester hours must be completed. This entails 47 hours of General Studies requirements, 36 hours in the Sociology curriculum, and 21 semester hours of free electives selected from 300 and 400 level course offerings. The 47 General Studies requirements should be completed during the freshman and sophomore years. Sociology majors must take either ACFN 090 (Basic Algebra) or Math 105 (Algebra) as preparation for Math 314 (Statistics). Statistics is required by the Sociology program and will meet the Math requirement for Shepherd graduation in General Studies. If students are sufficiently prepared in Mathematics to take Statistics (Math 314), they must replace the Basic Algebra or algebra credit hours. In addition, coursework in computer information systems is recommended.
