SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University is offering a new program that will allow visitors a three-night stay on campus while they explore the area and see plays at the Contemporary American Theater Festival. The Shepherd Master Scholars program is offering a long weekend on July 28-31 full of activities.

Dr. Tom Segar, vice president for student affairs, said the program is open to anyone who’s interested but is designed for lifelong learners.

“Rather than catering to our traditional college student and providing a great experience for them, this is geared toward their parents or even their grandparents,” Segar said. “We’re thinking about them as the population we want to attract to come to campus.”

Segar said the Master Scholars program will be intellectually stimulating but will also give visitors a chance to relax. The weekend will include tickets to two Contemporary American Theater Festival plays, private tours conducted by historians of Antietam National Battlefield and Shepherd’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War, a healthy cooking class, a bike ride along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, a wine pairing dinner, and access to the Wellness Center.

“This is a long weekend of both relaxation and rejuvenation, an opportunity for folks to come to Shepherdstown and learn more about the university,” Segar said. “We want them to fall in love with the area, to gain a deep appreciation of what this area offers, and we would love for them to come to Shepherd again after this experience.”

Shepherd Master Scholars can choose to stay on campus in one of the university’s apartment-style residence halls or commute. Costs are $1,200 double occupancy and $750 single occupancy to stay on campus, and $500 with no lodging.
