Where are you located, and what are your hours?
We are located in Knutti 114, straight through the double doors across from the main entrance on the first floor. We are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Papers can be submitted to ShepOwl at any time when classes are in session, although turnaround is typically slower on the weekends, during midterms and finals.

Who are you?
The Shepherd University Writing Center is part of the Shepherd University Academic Support Center. We employ peer tutors, typically English or English Education majors, who set time aside to review papers and provide constructive criticism. The Academic Support Center also offers tutoring for most other subjects.

Is tutoring really free?
No, but the cost of tutoring is included in your tuition. This is a service available to all Shepherd University students regardless of full or part time status.

How do I make an appointment?
The best way to make an appointment with a tutor is to sign up for a slot in a tutor's schedule. Schedules are located on the table directly to your left as you walk into Knutti 114. Tutors are responsible for keeping track of their own schedules, and many of them are not able to come in to the Writing Center to check their pages more than once a day. For that reason, we ask that you sign up at least 24 hours in advance.

What do I do if I need to cancel my appointment?
Most tutors will make their contact information available on their schedule pages, and the most effective way to cancel an appointment is to contact your tutor directly. If you are unable to do so, call (304) 876-5221 and tell our administrative assistant, Missy Welsh. If you do not make an attempt to contact your tutor in the event of a cancellation, tutors have the right to refuse to meet with you in the future, so it's important to let them know if you can't make it.

What happens if I just don't show up for my appointment?
Tutors are students first and foremost, and many of them are full-time students with jobs. If you fail to show up to a tutoring session without attempting to contact your tutor, you have wasted their time as well as your own. Tutors are only paid for the time they spend actually tutoring. For these reasons, a tutor can opt to refuse a tutoring session for any reason. Skipping tutoring sessions can make it more difficult to get tutoring services in the future.

What should I bring with me?
It is best if you bring a paper copy of your paper, your assignment, and any resources that you are using to write your paper. These might include your textbook, notes, research or library books.

What should I expect?
Each tutor has his or her own strategy for helping to revise papers, but typically a tutor will want to scan your paper and then give you feedback based on your structure, delivery, MLA correctness, and the like. Tutors may or may not point out mispellings, typos, and grammatical errors. It is not our job to proofread for grammar and punctuation, although if a tutor notices a recurring problem in your writing, it will probably be adressed during the session. If you are only able to bring an electronic copy of your paper, a tutor will not correct typographical and punctuation errors for you, even if he or she points them out.

Can I just drop my paper off and come back for it later?
No. We are not a proofreading service, and if you do not have time for a face-to-face tutoring session, then you should submit your paper to ShepOwl, our online tutoring service.

What qualifications do your tutors have?
All of our writing tutors have taken English 377, Peer Tutoring and Composition Theory. This course helps the tutors learn the skills and the theories necessary to help other students improve their writing. If you are interested in becoming a tutor, you must complete English 101, 102 or 104, and English 377, which is offered each fall. Most writing tutors are upper class English and English Education majors.
