Alternative Spring Break
Are you tired of boring spring breaks? Want to make a difference in the community? Looking for new friends? Does spending a week helping others sound interesting?
Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a service-oriented trip taken during Shepherd University's Spring Break. Students travel away from campus and spend the week working to improve the lives of others. We are currently accepting applications for ASB '10 which will occur March 14-20, 2010.
Completed applications should be submitted by January 29, 2010. Applications received after this date will be considered until spaces are filled.
Last year, one brave group of fourteen students piled into minivans and drove to Penns Grove, New Jersey. They spent a week sleeping in a church, showering in a community center, and working for Habitat for Humanity. Two students, Kyle Hendrickson and Jessica Muth, videotaped the entire ASB experience for their capstone Mass Communications project. To further understand the ASB experience, please click here to see a trailer of their work. Over the course of a week, the group laid over 800 blocks so that a foundation could be poured for two neighboring houses. It was a very stressful but rewarding experience for all who went on the adventure.
A second group remained in the Shepherdstown area. This group, led by Jonathan Calabretta, served the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate based in Martinsburg. The local ASB group worked for the Habitat ReStore, which sells construction odds and ends as a way to benefit the non-profit and get rid of job site extras.
All applications will be reviewed by a committee of staff, faculty, and/or ASB alumni. Students are chosen based on a variety of reasons. Do not refrain from applying because you think you will not be chosen or lack experience. Everyone has something to offer.
