Shepherd University Residence Life - Community Development

Community Development

Shepherd University utilizes a community development model in each of our residence halls. We offer students opportunities to explore their uniqueness as individuals and as members of a diverse community. We are committed to helping students develop beyond mere understanding and tolerance toward greater appreciation and acceptance of others. As a result, we provide innovative programs and sound policies and procedures that promote citizenship, life skills, and continuing education. Our programs and services enhance learning outside of the classroom and allow us to connect to the University’s academic mission.

Programming is useful on many levels. Good programming teaches and provides educational experiences outside of the classroom. Good programming also assists in developing community through social, recreational, and community service activities. It also often allows residents to explore issues and topics that may not be covered in traditional classrooms.

Goals of Programming:

  • To help students improve interpersonal and social skills.
  • To develop a sense of community on a residence hall floor or in a residence hall.
  • To educate and inform students.
  • To engage students in their own learning
  • To provide an outlet for the release of emotions or to maintain or develop physical fitness.
  • To provide opportunities for students to expand their social acquaintances and friendships.
  • To promote self-discovery. (Blimling, 1999)

Shepherd University’s community development model will aid our students in building a positive residential community.
