SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Registration is now open for the 22nd annual Civil War and American Society Seminar sponsored by Shepherd University’s George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War. The seminar, titled “Distant Thunder: The Fighting Men, Material Culture, and Contested Memories of Gettysburg,” will take place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, October 11-14 and will include tours of Gettysburg National Military Park, a visit to the Seminary Ridge Museum, and a unique opportunity that will bring artifacts back to the Gettysburg Battlefield with Wayne Motts and the National Civil War Museum. Three guest scholars for the seminar include Dennis E. Frye, Kevin Pawlak and Dana B. Shoaf.
Frye is former chief historian at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, writer, lecturer, guide, and preservationist. Frye has made numerous appearances on PBS, History Channel, Discovery Channel, and A&E. Frye is has written 101 articles and 10 books, including, “Harpers Ferry Under Fire,” “September Suspense: Lincoln’s Union in Peril,” and “Antietam Shadows: Mystery, Myth, and Machination.”
Pawlak is the director of education for the Mosby Heritage Area Association and a licensed battlefield guide at Antietam National Battlefield. He is on the board of directors of the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association and the Save Historic Antietam Foundation. Pawlak published his first book, “Shepherdstown in the Civil War: One Vast Confederate Hospital,” in 2015.
Shoaf is the editor of Civil War Times magazine, the world’s leading periodical on the subject. He has been immersed in the study of the Civil War and American history for more than 40 years. Shoaf has published a number of articles and book reviews on the Civil War and can be seen on C-SPAN. Shoaf has served as a consultant on Civil War matters for the Smithsonian Institution, Library of Congress, and the National Archives.
Applications are also being accepted for the 2018 C. Stuart McGehee Memorial Scholarship to attend the seminar. The scholarship allows one undergraduate student to attend the center’s annual Civil War and American Society Seminar. All undergraduate students attending college in the state of West Virginia are eligible to apply. The deadline for submitting applications is 5 p.m. on Friday, September 7.
