SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Department of Political Science is organizing a Teach-In, titled “Issues in the 2016 Elections,” on Tuesday, March 8, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education (formerly Byrd Center for Legislative Studies) auditorium. The event, which will explore various aspects of this year’s election, is free and open to the public.
Dr. Stephanie Slocum-Schaffer, associate professor and chair of the political science department, will make a presentation on the U.S. Supreme Court’s role in the elections and on the vacancy after the unexpected death of Justice Antonin Scalia. Dr. Joseph Robbins, associate professor of political science, will talk about the two-party system in the United States and the challenges this election cycle poses to it. Dr. Max Guirguis, professor of political science, will speak on Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution, known as the natural born citizen clause, and will address the question of whether Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is eligible to hold the office of U.S. president. Dr. Aart Holtslag, assistant professor of political science, will moderate the discussion.
