National History:
Phi Kappa Tau was
founded in the Union Literary Society Hall of Miami University's Old Main
Building in Oxford, Ohio on March 17, 1906. The four honored founders were:
Founded as the
Non-Fraternity Association to give Miami's non-fraternity men a voice in
campus political affairs, the organization changed its name to Phrenecon on
March 6, 1909 because the name Non-Fraternity Association seemed too
negative.
Phrenecon became
"national" in 1911 when a second chapter was formed at Ohio University.
Additional Phrenecon chapters were established at Ohio State University,
Centre College (Danville, KY), Mount Union College (Alliance, OH) and the
University of Illinois. At Miami, Phrenecon began to have difficuly
retaining members by the early 'teens. Often, men joined Phrenecon, then
later dropped their membership and joined Greek-letter fraternities. In
fact, the Miami chapters of Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon were
founded by Phrenecon members. For that reason, the Miami Chapter of
Phrenecon withdrew from the National Phrenecon and adopted the name Phi
Kappa Tau on March 9, 1916. The rest of the chapters agreed to the name
change in December of that year and invited Miami to return to the national
organization as the Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau.
History of PKT Epsilon Omega:
Chartered as Phi Kappa Tau, November 20, 2004
In the fall of 2001, a group of men at Shepherd wanted to experience a
different fraternal life than what the campus had to offer. The
colonization took place in February of 2002, and the colony began to
work towards their next goal: chartering. With many high and low points,
the men successfully petitioned for their charter in the Fall of 2004.
In their time on campus, the brothers have become the largest fraternity
on campus, consistently are at the top in academics, and excel in
community service. The group has a solid relationship with
Administration at Shepherd University and has built an excellent
reputation.
The installation weekend was November 19-20, 2004. Initiations took
place on the 19th at Shepherd University. The following day, the
petition was signed in Reynolds Hall-the same room the interest group
met in two years prior. The Installation Banquet was at the Holiday Inn
Ballroom, Martinsburg, WV. Vice President Charlie Ball gave the Keynote
Address, Domain Director Mike Dovilla was the host, Leadership
Consultant Nick DiMasi presented the gavel to the Chapter, and Chapter
President David Hoffman accepted the charter.
