SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Phaze 2 Gallery in the Center for Contemporary Arts will host an exhibit of work by Washington, D.C., artist Barbara Frank November 18-January 17. An opening reception and artist talk are planned for Wednesday, November 30 at 5 p.m. The event and exhibit are free and open to the public.
Frank creates expansive paintings and drawings. Her artistic influences are far-ranging, and include early Spanish painters, classical French artists, German expressionists, and Japanese screen painters and calligraphers. Her work is also informed by her review of new research on brain functions—especially the relationship between the conscious and unconscious. Frank is a photographer and writer as well. She is currently working on a series of essays about her work and life.
Frank’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries locally and nationally and is included in private and corporate collections. She has been awarded a DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities Individual Artist grant and has received multiple resident fellowships at the MacDowell Colony, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Hilai Artists Residency in Mitzpe Ramon, Israel. Her papers are collected by the Archives of American Art for her work in the women’s art movement in the 1970s and 1980s.
