SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Phaze 2 Gallery will offer exhibits for the coming school year that offer a mix of work by faculty, students, and outside artists. Scheduled exhibits include:
August 28-September 14—Phaze 2 Gallery in collaboration with North Mountain Artist Residency presents New Orleans artist and Mardi Gras parade producer Katrina Brees. This installation will slowly evolve over several weeks. Brees will construct her casket sculptures in the gallery space where visitors can see her process and occasionally talk with her about her concept. The exhibition will culminate in a closing reception on Thursday, September 14, from 4-7 p.m. Also in the works is an interactive workshop with Brees that explores alternative approaches to the end of life. Using a variety of formats, participants will look at the creative ways in which different cultures deal with loss, and some practical aspects of planning for death will be considered.
September 25-October 13—An exhibit featuring the works of Shepherd Department of Contemporary Art and Theater faculty members. Full-time faculty include Rhonda Smith, Rick Bruner, Sonya Evanisko, Kristin Kaineg, Christian Benefiel, David Modler, Erin Neve, and Bradford Hamann. Adjunct faculty include Evan Boggess, Robert Farmer, Michael Mendez, and clinical faculty Keven Dart. An opening reception is scheduled for, Monday, September 25, from 4-7 p.m.
October 23-November 17—“Beautiful Pig” by Shepherd alumnus Ben Schonberger, which includes photographs by retired Detroit police officer Marty Gaynor. Schonberger will give an artist lecture about two collections of his work Monday, October 23, at 3:30 p.m. at the gallery and an opening reception is scheduled that day from 4-7 p.m.
November 27-January 12, 2018—Costumes, scenery, and visual dialogues of the Contemporary American Theater Festival. An opening reception is scheduled for Tuesday, November 28, from 4-7 p.m.
January 16-February 9, 2018—An interactive digital media installation by Nick Lejeune, an instructor of cross media studio art at Fairmont State University. Lejeune will be scheduled to give a digital workshop for artists explaining and demonstrating the free programs and inexpensive hardware used to create versatile digital art platforms.
February 14-23, 2018—High school juried art competition. Local high school students are invited to participate in a multi-media exhibition to be curated and awarded by a guest juror.
February 28-16, 2018—Student Honors Exhibition featuring the work of Shepherd University art students. A reception and awards ceremony is scheduled Wednesday, February 28, 2018, from 4-7 p.m.
March 19-April 11, 2018—Painting exhibit of new work by Philadelphia artist Marcelle Reinecke, who will also be scheduled to give a visiting artist lecture on the narrative anecdotes and painting processes driving the her paintings.
April 16-27, 2018—Capstone competitive proposals. Selected graduating seniors of the Shepherd contemporary art program will be showing their work in two rounds of short exhibitions.
