SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Performing Arts Series at Shepherd University will present the acclaimed dance and musical troupe Children of Uganda on Wednesday, January 15, at 8 p.m. at the Frank Center Theater. The performers, ranging in age from 10 to 22, present an uplifting program highlighting the cultural traditions of their East African homeland and have performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as well as at hundreds of venues across the country. The New York Times writes: “It was euphoric. Along with art, Children of Uganda is a celebration of dignity.” The program is appropriate for audiences of all ages.
Children of Uganda’s “Tour of Light” shares the brilliant music, dance, and cultural history of Uganda while raising awareness about the country’s orphan crisis. With the largest orphan population per capita of any country in the world, Uganda has nearly 2.4 million children who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS, extreme poverty, or civil conflict. As a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in the United States, Children of Uganda works in conjunction with local non-governmental organizations in Uganda to provide education and support to hundreds of children in need.
