SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Performing Arts Series at Shepherd University brings the Japanese thunder drumming of San Jose Taiko to the Frank Center Theater on Monday, April 13, at 8 p.m. In addition to the Monday evening performance, the group will conduct a free workshop, an introduction to the art of taiko, on Monday, April 13, from 3-4:30 p.m. on the stage of the Frank Center Theater.

Founded in 1973, San Jose Taiko has been mesmerizing audiences with the sound of Japanese taiko drumming for more than 40 years. Performers strive to create new dimensions in Asian American music and movement by including African, Brazilian, Filipino, Latin, and jazz rhythms. Company members also study both contemporary and traditional dance with leading choreographers.

The free workshop is open to community members of all ages. In addition to learning from the performers, workshop participants will have an opportunity to have hands-on experience with the drums.

On Tuesday, April 14 the company will present a special performance for Shepherdstown Elementary School.

Tickets are $15 for the general public; $10 for seniors and Shepherd employees; $5 for children; and free for Shepherd students with valid Rambler ID. Tickets are available online at the Shepherd University Bookstore www.shepherdbook.com or by calling 304-876-5219. For more information, contact rmeads@shepherd.edu.
