West Virginia Senate Education Committee Currently Considering House Bill 2543 Affecting Higher Education Personnel

The West Virginia Legislature is currently considering and voting on several pieces of legislation that, if passed by both houses, will affect higher education and its employees.  Specifically, House Bill 2542, passed by the House on February 28, contains  two provisions that create much debate: it removes bumping rights of employees based upon seniority and eliminates the requirement to recall employees after being laid off.  According to Register-Herald.com, “opponent, Ed Evans, D-McDowell, called it ‘some of the most anti-worker legislation’ that lawmakers could propose.” You can read House Bill 2542 here.  You can also read other comments and opinions expressed by legislators about this bill here.  The bill is currently before the Senate Education Committee.
