SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Scarborough Society will feature local author John Splaine on Tuesday, November 14, at 7 p.m. in the Scarborough Library Reading Room. Splaine will discuss his debut novel, “Mr. M’s Notebook: A Teacher’s Life,” which draws on his experience as a teacher and addresses education issues that are still relevant today. The program is free and open to the public. A dessert reception will follow the lecture.
Splaine has taught for more than 50 years at the high school and college level, including Shepherd University. He has served as a consultant to C-SPAN, which included work on the network’s original series “The Lincoln-Douglas Debates and American Writers,” and the History Channel’s 2005 Peabody Award winning documentary series “American Presidents.”
In addition to his teaching career, Splaine has written three nonfiction books on government, history, and media literacy. “Mr. M’s Notebook: A Teacher’s Life” is his first work of fiction. Relevant to teachers, prospective teachers, administrators, and parents alike, the story touches on everyday happenings in schools and society and inspires the readers to think about what could be changed.
