SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Family and Consumer Sciences students at Shepherd will give the campus and community the opportunity to learn what has influenced clothing styles in various countries and time periods. On Tuesday, December 6, from 3-5 p.m. in the Student Center Ram’s Den, 25 students in the Cultural Influences on Clothing class will set up poster displays that are based on research they’ve done. The students will be on hand to present information and answer questions about their topics. The event is free and open to the public.

The displays will cover a wide range of topics and will include displays on Kentucky Derby fashion, the history and culture of bras, lipstick as a cultural item, drag queens, and the culture of denim. The Cultural Influence on Clothing class is taught each fall in even number years. It offers an integrated approach to the study of the diverse meanings, symbolism, and significance which people attach to clothing and appearance.
