Common Reading features discussions on Pakistan

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Common Reading and Shepherd University Foundation are sponsoring a series of events that explore the 2014-15 Common Reading book “I Am Malala.”

Local residents Fred and Lois Turco will present “Our Life in Pakistan,” a conversation about their years living in Pakistan, on Thursday, October 30 at 12:30 p.m. in the Cumberland Room of the Student Center.

A themed dinner will be hosted in the Dining Hall on Tuesday, November 4 from 4:30-8 p.m. The cost is $ 7.50 per person and free for Shepherd students who have a meal plan. Following the dinner at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Erma Ora Byrd Hall will be the film “Bhutto,” a documentary about Malala Yousafzai’s heroine and Pakistan politician Benazir Bhutto, who followed her father’s footsteps as a pillar for democracy and was assassinated in a bombing in December 2007, two weeks before the scheduled 2008 general election.

A Middle Eastern themed activity will be part of the Late Night in the Zone, a monthly social event sponsored by Student Affairs, on Friday, November 14 at 9 p.m. in the Ram’s Den, Student Center. The event will include henna, food, music, art, and dance.

A clothing poster showcase by students from the Family Consumer and Sciences Program will display the Pakistani cultural dress on Tuesday, December 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Ram’s Den, Student Center.
