Shepherd University Students Win Competitions AT WVMTA Conference
At the recent 42nd Annual State Conference of the West Virginia Music Teachers Association, Shepherd University music majors, won various prizes during the competitions. In addition, junior-high and high school students of Dr. Scott Beard, Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at Shepherd University, were competition winners during the conference that was held November 7 and 8 on the campus of Shepherd University.
Matthew Carey, student of Shepherd University's Gary Mullenax, was the winner of the WVMTA Mountain State Collegiate Piano competition. Kari Edge, student of Dr. Scott Beard, received an Honorable Mention in Collegiate Piano. Other winners of the WVMTA Mountain State Competitions include Ellen Wang, First Place in Junior Piano, and Maria Bennici, Honorable Mention in Senior Piano, both students of Dr. Scott Beard.
The following winners in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) competitions will continue on to compete at the 13-state Eastern Division competitions to be held at West Chester University, Pennsylvania, in January 2009: Jason Solounias, student of Dr. Scott Beard, First Place winner of Young Artist Piano; Darwin Yang, student of Dr. Scott Beard, First Place in Senior Piano; Edward Yoon, student of Dr. Scott Beard, First Place in Junior Piano; Jane Wang and Maria Bennici, students of Dr. Scott Beard, state representatives for Senior Piano Duet; Pedro Gonzalez-Fernandez, composition student of Shepherd University's Cam Millar, state representative for Young Artist Composition; and George Fu, student of Dr. Scott Beard, state representative for Senior Composition; Shepherd University Saxophone Quartet - Katie Beach, Thad Garrett, Ryan Yost and Jordan English, coached by Jeremy Koch and Dr. Scott Beard, 2nd place for Young Artist Chamber Music.
