Shepherd University Vocal Competition

Shepherd University Department of Music will host its annual Vocal Competition at the Frank Center for the Arts on the campus of Shepherd University on Saturday, January 19, 2013. This competition is open to high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate excellent potential as endorsed by their music teacher. The application deadline is Friday, December 28, 2012.

The Shepherd Vocal Competition is an annual event organized by the Voice Department at Shepherd University in an effort to provide young singers the opportunity to perform and receive feedback from professional musicians. This is also an opportunity for these young artists to become familiar with Shepherd University's music program and what it has to offer as they consider their options for pursuing a music degree.

The daylong event will consist of preliminary auditions, a selection of finalists, an Honors Recital presented by Shepherd students, and an Awards ceremony including performances by each of the chosen prize winners. The Honors Recital and Awards Ceremony are free and open to the public.

Former winners of the competition have performed with major opera companies including New York City Opera, starred on Broadway and in national touring companies, won major awards including the Marian Anderson Prize and the Rosa Ponselle Young Singers Prize, and become exceptional teachers.

The competition offers a top prize of $1000, as well as second and third cash prizes, which will include a prize $300 Jane Grissinger Memorial Award from Shepherd musician and faculty member, Anne Munro. The Music Department is also seeking tax-deductible donations to support the artist prize fund.
