Shepherd University Youth Orchestra Auditions
The Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra will hold auditions for its 13th season on Wednesday August 31st beginning at 6:00 p.m. for Junior and Senior Preparatory Orchestra members at the Shepherd University Frank Creative Arts Center in Shepherdstown, WV. Positions are open in all string sections in both orchestras.
This fall the Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra begins its 13th season at Shepherd University is pleased to welcome interim director, Mr. Jeffry Newberger. Mr. Newberger is currently Assistant Conductor of both the Trinity Chamber Orchestra and Apollo Chamber Orchestra, as well as Executive Music Director for Opera Alterna, for which he has directed productions of Thomas Pasatieri's Padrevia and Douglas Moore's Gallantry. In great demand as a music director, he has led productions of The Last Five Years, Ragtime, and most recently, Andrew Lloyd Webber's By Jeeves. As a violinist, Mr. Newberger is a member of the Apollo Chamber Orchestra and Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, and has performed with the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Charlottesville, Concert Artists of Baltimore, Opera Camerata of Washington, and as Acting Concertmaster the York (PA) Symphony Orchestra. An avid proponent of new music, he performs regularly with the Third Millennium Ensemble as violinist and conductor and has worked extensively with local composers to premiere their works. Mr. Newberger is an adjunct of the violin faculty at the McLean School of Maryland and is on the preparatory division faculty at Shepherd University.
Mr. Newberger holds a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting and received a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, magna cum laude, from the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music at the Catholic University of America, where he was Assistant Conductor of both the CUA Symphony Orchestra and CUA Chamber Singers and conducted performances of Cosi fan tutte and Gianni Schicchi. He studied conducting with Kate Tamarkin and Piotr Gajewski, and violin with Jody Gatwood and Odin Rathnam.
Students auditioning for the Junior Youth Orchestra are asked to prepare a solo and scale of their choice to perform at the audition, and should be able to sight-read music at a beginner to early intermediate level. Students auditioning for the Senior Youth Orchestra are asked to prepare a solo of their choice and will be asked to play scales and sight-read. Students wishing to audition on violin or viola will be heard from 6:00 -8:00 PM. Students wishing to audition on cello or bass will be heard from 8:00-9:00 PM. All students will be auditioned on a first-come, first-serve basis during the scheduled audition time for their instrument. Other audition times may be arranged with the consent of the orchestra director.
The Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra meets Wednesday evenings for rehearsals throughout the school year. Each group also presents two concerts during the school year. The orchestra is made up of student members from Washington County, Maryland and Berkeley and Jefferson Counties in West Virginia as well as students from Shepherd University. The tuition fee for the Shepherd Youth Orchestra is $125 per semester and will include two complimentary family member admissions to each concert.
