Shepherd University Preparatory Orchestra and Preparatory Chorus Concert
The Shepherd University Department of Music Preparatory Division is pleased to present the Shepherd Preparatory Chorus in a concert along with the Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra and Junior String Ensemble in the Frank Arts Center Theater on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m.
The Shepherd Preparatory Chorus, under the direction of Dr. David Gonzol, Assistant Professor and Director of Music Education at Shepherd, will sing God Save the Queen, one of the oldest unison national anthems, in honor of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty, Elizabeth II; the American spiritual, Pretty Little Baby; Boomfallera, an Orff Schulwerk piece with instrumentarium and chorus in two voices, with the "Curly Locks" melody composed new for this performance by the children of the chorus as a team improvisation effort; George and Ira Gershwin's last song, Love is Here to Stay, a beautiful unison melody from the 1938 movie flop, The Goldwyn Follies; and Ching A Ring Chaw (and Great Gittin' Up Mornin'), a two-voice arrangement of a polyphonic "mash-up" of two old American folk songs.
The Shepherd Preparatory Orchestra and Junior String Ensemble, under the direction of conductor Jeffry Newberger, will perform Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto, Movement No. 1 with featured soloist Edward Yoon; Symphony No. 8 ("The Unfinished") by Franz Schubert; Hoedown from "Rodeo" by Aaron Copland; Hail The Conquering Hero from "Judas Maccabeus" by George Frideric Handel, arr.Caponegro; Farandole from "L'arlesienne Suite No. 2" by Georges Bizet, arr. Phillippe; Gymnopedie No. 1 by Erik Satie, arr. Robert Klotman; and "Finale" from Symphony No. 5 by Ludwig van Beethoven, arr. Richard Meyer. Assistant conductor Kari Edge will lead the Senior Orchestra in George Frideric Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks.
Heralded as one of the best youth orchestras in the region, both groups are comprised of elementary, middle and high school wind and string students from Washington County, Maryland and Berkeley and Jefferson Counties in West Virginia. The orchestra meets Wednesday evenings for rehearsals and presents two concerts during the school year. Enrollment is open and based on an audition process. Shepherd University Music faculty string coaches for the orchestra are Heather Austin Stone for violin, Kathy Shrader for viola, and Stephen Czarkowski for cello. Wind, percussion and string players from Shepherd University also participate in the orchestra.
