Josh Quinlan Quintet
The Shepherd University Music Department presents the fourth concert in its new monthly Shepherd Music Salon Series in the W. H. Shipley Recital Hall of the Frank Arts Center. On Tuesday, January 10 at 7:30 p.m. the Josh Quinlan Quintet, the innovative, modern jazz group from the Front Range area of Colorado will perform a concert free and open to the public
Josh Quinlan, saxophonist, composer and educator based out Colorado, has performed with many jazz greats including Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeeley, Louis Bellson, Bob Mintzer, Natalie Cole, Bobby Shew, Steve Wilson, Greg Gisbert, Fred Wesley, Brad Goode, The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Maria Schneider, Claudio Roditi and others. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Colorado, and is a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (BM) and DePaul University (MMA). Quinlan is currently a music faculty member at Denver School of the Arts, Director of Education for the Colorado non-profit Gift of Jazz, director of the Dazzle Recordings label and co-director of the Telluride Jazz Celebration All-Star Program. Recent performance highlights include appearances at Jazz Aspen Snowmass with Natalie Cole, Telluride Jazz Celebration, Denver Jazz Festival, Peru Jazz Festival en Lima, concerts with the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra and collaboration with Michigan Poet Laureate Linda Nemic Foster. Before moving to Colorado in 2007, Quinlan spent many years in Chicago where his artistry was recognized with the Chicago Artist Award and through membership to the Illinois Arts Council's Artstour program. He has also been on the faculty of the Chicago Academy for the Arts, Harold Washington University and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
The Quintet is Dr. Josh Quinlan on saxophones, John Lake on trumpet, Dr. Ben Markley on piano, Marty Kenney on bass, and Ed Breazeale on drums. The members of the Josh Quinlan Quintet migrated to Colorado in the last several years from major U.S. jazz hubs including New York City, Chicago and Cincinnati. The Josh Quinlan Quintet's newest album, Mountain Time Standards, was released in November, 2011 on the Dazzle Recordings label based out of Denver, Colorado. Mountain Time Standards features Quinlan's original compositions that reflect on the beauty of living in the Rocky Mountain Region of Colorado. The January 2012 tour is in support and promotion of the new recording and includes performances at the Jazz Education Network Conference in Louisville, KY, a day of residency at Shepherd University and appearances at jazz venues in cities across the country.
