Annual Vocal Competition

Shepherd University Department of Music will host its annual Vocal Competition at the Frank Center for the Arts on the campus of Shepherd University on Saturday, January 28, 2012. Participants are area high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate excellent potential as endorsed by their high school teacher, church choir director, or private instructor.

The Shepherd Vocal Competition is an annual event organized by the Voice Department at Shepherd University in an effort to provide young singers the opportunity to perform for and receive feedback from professional musicians. This is also an opportunity for these young artists to become familiar with Shepherd University's music program and what it has to offer as they consider their options for college.

The day-long event will consist of preliminary auditions, a selection of finalists, an Honors Recital presented by Shepherd students, and an Awards ceremony including performances by each of the chosen prize winners. The Honors Recital and Awards Ceremony are free and open to the public.

Former winners of the competition have become members of the New York City Opera and other major and regional opera companies; they have starred on Broadway and in national touring companies; have won major awards including the Marian Anderson Prize and the Rosa Ponselle Young Singers Prize; have become exceptional teachers; and have been recipients of scholarships to prestigious music schools.

The competition offers a top prize of $1000, sponsored by Arts and Humanities Alliance of Jefferson County (AHA!), and a third prize $300 Jane Grissinger Memorial Award from Shepherd musician and faculty member, Anne Munro. Contributions for a second prize, for which a naming opportunity exists, are still being sought.
