Dale Underwood

Acclaimed by the Washington Post as the "Heifetz"of the alto saxophone, and by leading classical music magazines as one of the preeminent saxophonists in the world, Dale Underwood was appointed to the Shepherd University Faculty in 1999Mr. Underwood is recognized as one of the foremost classical saxophonists of our time. He has toured extensively throughout the world as a featured soloist, performing in every state, as well as throughout Europe, North and South America. During his years as saxophone soloist with the United States Navy Band, he performed for every president since Lyndon Johnson.

A frequent soloist with leading orchestras both in the United States and abroad, Mr. Underwood is also a noted recording artist. He has amassed a prolific discography of classical and contemporary works by composers Paul Creston, Robert Muczynski and Maurice Whitney. His vast repertoire includes all of the standard saxophone concerti, as well as over thirty original works written especially for him.

In demand as a teacher and workshop clinician at universities, conservatories and music festivals in the United States and Europe, Mr. Underwood is a highly respected instructor of the saxophone. He currently holds professorships at George Mason University, the University of Maryland College Park, and as of January 1999, Shepherd University.
