Shepherd University Jazz Combos
The Jazz Combos at Shepherd University are designed to meet the diverse experience base of the music student. Directed by Dr. Mark Cook, these ensembles explore the recordings and compositions that encompass the jazz repertoire. From standards to contemporary literature, the student is challenged to listen to what has been the tradition in jazz while all the time developing his or her own musical vocabulary.
Combo I rehearses on Tuesdays and is the more advanced of the two ensembles. The repertoire includes standard and contemporary jazz literature as well as more obscure compositions from lesser-known jazz composers. The emphasis is on performance, arrangements, and improvisation and the group is expected to perform for college and community functions.
Combo II rehearses Thursdays and is geared toward the beginning to intermediate performer who is interested in learning the fundamentals of the jazz combo. Emphasis is placed on the standard jazz repertoire, group sound, form analysis, introductions, and endings.
