Music to host percussion day and drum competition March 29

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University Department of Music will host the West Virginia Percussive Arts Society 2014 Spring Day of Percussion Saturday, March 29 in the Frank Center. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The first event, a snare drum competition, starts at 10 a.m. with high school and collegiate divisions.

Orlando Cotto is the featured guest for a clinic and performance on the marimba and other Latin percussion instruments.

Other event activities include a hand-drumming fundamentals session with Mike Vercelli, a snare drum clinic with J. Mark Reilly, and a marimba and Latin percussion session with Cotto and Jim Hannah, a timbalero in Rumba Club. The day will conclude with a concert featuring the top-placing snare-drum competition participants and performances by percussion ensembles from Shepherd, West Liberty University, West Virginia University, and Concord University, and Cotto at 3:30 p.m.

Registration is $10 for non-Percussive Arts Society members and free for current members. The PAS is offering a special promotion for the $10 registration fee to include a trial membership for an entire year. To obtain membership prior to the event, go to www.pas.org.
