Music department offers free concerts December 1, 2, and 3

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Students and faculty from the Shepherd University Department of Music are performing a series of free concerts December 1, 2, and 3 in the Frank Center.

Student compositions concert December 1

A concert featuring the work of student composers will take place on Monday, December 1, at 3:15 p.m. in the McCoy Rehearsal Hall. The recital will highlight a variety of completed works and works-in-progress by student composers in the music department. Students whose compositions will be performed are Ian Karraker, Anthony Farris, Patrick Harper, Kris Nigh, and Ryan Stewart.

Works include “Impromptu for Violin and Piano” by Karraker, featuring adjunct professors Heather Austin-Stone on violin and Nathan Arch at the piano; a transcription of “Saxophone Quartet” by Farris, with Whitney Bloom on piccolo, Katie Houle on flute, Melissa McKay on alto flute, and Hannah Geerlings on bass flute; “Gayatri” by Harper, featuring soprano Bethany Pryzbocki, Patrick Harper on sitar, and Dave Harper on strum stick/guitar; “Fake Out” for Jazz Sextet by Nigh, with Alvaro Silva on trumpet, Justin Loizos on saxophone, Kris Nigh on trombone, Mary Granofsky on piano, Dan Dunn on bass, and Sawyer Gaydon on drums; and “Massacre at Glen Coe” by Stewart, performed by Melissa McKay on flute, Walker Williams on oboe, Sarah Ciaccio on clarinet, Ashleigh Stottlemeyer and Adrielle Mills on horn, Ryan McClure on bassoon, Nathan Krevey and Samuel Thomas on trumpet, Rachel Bani on trombone, and Gregory Woodward on tuba.

Best small ensembles December 2

A concert featuring the best of the music department’s small ensembles will take place on Tuesday, December 2 at 8 p.m. in the W. H. Shipley Recital Hall. The evening will highlight performances of guitar trios, a flute quartet, a flute quintet, string trios, quartets and quintets, a saxophone quartet, and a jazz combo.

Works to be performed include “Toccato” from Suite Gothique by Leon Boellmann; “Divertimento No. 3” by Mozart; “String Quartet in D” by Schubert; “String Quartet No. 55” by Haydn; “String Quartet No.1, Op. 18” by Beethoven; “String Quartet No. 6, K. 159a” by Mozart; and “Violin Duos No. 32 and 35” by Bartok.

Guitar concert December 3

An evening of music for guitar ensembles directed by William Feasley, adjunct guitar professor, is scheduled for Wednesday, December 3, at 8 p.m. in the W. H. Shipley Recital Hall.

Included in this program are “Trio for Three Guitars” by Mozart; “Trio Concertino” by Alan Hirsh; “Tonadilla for Two Guitars” by Joaquin Rodrigo; “Villanesco and Rujero” by Gaspar Sanz; and “Brandenburg Concerto No. 3” by Bach arranged for six guitars.

The performance will include students from Feasley’s classes at Shepherd, his private studio, and the Shepherd Music Preparatory Division.
