SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University is offering a five-week Mindfulness Meditation Workshop led by Dr. Anne Murtagh, associate professor of psychology, on Tuesdays beginning February 6 and running through March 6, from 3:15-4:30 p.m. in the Cumberland Room on the second floor of the Student Center. The workshop is free and open by reservation to students, faculty and staff, and members of the community.

Both beginners and more experienced practitioners are welcome. Topics will include an introduction to mindfulness and meditation, body awareness and relaxation, coping with difficult emotions, and cultivating joy, gratitude, and happiness.

“Preliminary research studies suggest that mindfulness and meditation seem to have a range of benefits, including enhancing focus and concentration, improving management of difficult emotions, and increasing body awareness,” Murtagh said. “It is often recommended as a tool for stress management.”

For more information and to reserve a spot in the Mindfulness Meditation Workshop, contact Murtagh at amurtagh@shepherd.edu or 304-876-5257.

Murtagh also co-leads a weekly Meditation Monday group that meets from 12:05-12:50 p.m. in the Cumberland Room, beginning on January 22. No reservations are needed for Meditation Monday.
