February 21, 2003
Present: Bonita Brooks, Brenda Feltner, Tim Haines, Paul Schwan, Dan Starliper, Peggy Swinston-Rivera, Patt Welsh, and Karl Wolf. Not Present: Geraldine Hammond, Steve Parrotte, Joy Phillips, Paula Scott, Phyllis Taylor, and Deneatta Williams.
Tim Haines, chair, called the meeting to order.
It was M/S/P that the January 21, 2003, minutes be approved as distributed.
Advisory Council of Classified Employees
Tim Haines reported that Ken Harbaugh and Anna Mary Walsh were in Charleston and attended yesterday's ACCE meeting. Tim also distributed a report from Anna Mary regarding the February 3-4, 2003, trip to Charleston that she, Ken, and Brenda Feltner took to meet with our Eastern Panhandle legislators on behalf of ACCE. They attended a portion of the House Finance Committee meeting where Chancellor Mullen was giving a presentation and being questioned by the delegates. They met with Delegate John Doyle immediately following that meeting, where Ken voiced the concerns of Shepherd College classified employees as well as with higher education in general.
Dan Starliper said that he attended the town meeting with some of our local legislators on Saturday. He suggested that we invite all the Republican legislators to one of our meetings.
Board of Governors
Dan Starliper reported on the February 13, 2003, Board meeting. His report is attached.
Karl Wolf encouraged classified staff to submit staff development requests. Patt Welsh suggested that textbook costs be reimbursed at 100%. After discussion, it was M/S/P to recommend to the Staff Development Committee to consider changing the textbook reimbursement from 50% to 100%.
This committee will be meeting in the next few weeks.
Buildings and Grounds
Peggy Swinston-Rivera distributed the February 6, 2003, Safety Committee minutes. Please see her attached minutes.
Anna Mary delivered valentines and lollipops to employees on Valentine's Day. Thank you Anna Mary for the morale booster!
Tim reported that the Classified Employee Salary Policy was approved by our salary subcommittee and was presented to the Board of Governors at the February meeting. It was M/S/P to approve the Classified Employee Salary Policy.
Tim will be representing the classified employees on the Budget Advisory Group. They will meet next week to discuss areas where Shepherd College can cut back. He needs ideas from all classified employees where money can be saved. Please e-mail (email@example.com) or call Tim (Ext. 5465) if you have any money-saving ideas.
Tim announced that four sessions entitled "Beyond Tolerance: Creating Effective Learning Communities Across Difference" would be presented on Thursday, February 27, Cumberland Room of the College Center at 8 a.m., 9:35 a.m., 1 p.m., and 7 p.m. He distributed a flyer and encouraged all classified employees to attend one of these sessions.
The next Council meeting will be Tuesday, March 18, at 9 a.m. in the Cumberland Room.
There being no further business, it was M/S/P to adjourn the meeting at 10:15 a.m.
