December 10, 1997

Members Present: Paul Allen, Johnette Jackson, Agnes Tabler, Ken Harbaugh, Karl Wolf, Dan Starliper, Harry Young, Geraldine Hammond, Donna Printz, Robert Jenkins, Paula Scott, Jacqueline Grantham, Anna Mary Walsh, and Marsha Branch.

The meeting was called to order by Anna Mary Walsh.

The minutes of the November 12, 1997 meeting were approved as distributed.

Paul Martinelli did follow through and send out the memo to BOT ACCE concerning Haywood Helmick's "what if's".

The JEC meetings are public but require the employee to take annual leave unless attendance is at the request of the institution. The JEC meet at least quarterly. They are currently looking at the Mercer job families. A question was raised concerning representation on the JEC and Dan Starliper stated that the human resources representatives rotate every two years but there is nothing that states the representative cannot serve concurrent terms.

Details of Procedure 37 are available. The only difference between board policy and Shepherd College policy is that according to board policy an employee can take one course during their normal work day without making up the time at the discretion of the supervisor.

Board of Advisors
They have not met as of this date but are scheduled to meet in February. No replacement has been named as of this date for Dan Stegall.

Social Committee
The Christmas Luncheon is scheduled for December 17th from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. in the basement of the Dining Hall. Dr. Dunlop has granted 1/2 hour of release time for employees to attend the luncheon. The cost of the luncheon will be $3.50.

Staff Development Committee
No report

Scholarship Committee
There is $24,872 in the Scholarship Fund. The Committee can award one-third of money received from interest and fundraisers during the year. The Committee is going to draft a proposal to increase the award to one-half of the money collected from interest and fundraisers.

Fifteen employees have signed up to have money for the Classified Employees Children's Scholarship Fund payroll deducted. This should bring in approximately $2,000 per year. Anyone interested in signing up for this payroll deduction can still do so.

Food Drive
The campus food drive has brought in over a ton of food.

The Friday of Spring Break was designated as a holiday for November 28th which the Governor declared as a state holiday.

The Governor has declared December 26th and January 2nd as state holidays. Since Shepherd is already closed on these days the Council will recommend to Dr. Dunlop that these days be given as follows: one day on the Thursday of Spring Break and one day added to the employee's annual leave.

Jim Watson will attend the January 14th meeting to discuss College Advancement.

Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Classified Employees Council will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 1998 at 9 a.m. in the Blue-Gray Room. Council meetings are open meetings.

Respectfully submitted,

Marsha A. Branch
Classified Employee Council Secretary
