Dan Starliper called the meeting of the Council to order.
Dr. Dunlop. Several different issues were discussed with Dr. Dunlop including: safety of Popodicon entrance; hiring of new Director of Administrative Affairs; search process for the two VP vacancies; construction projects of stadium, Boteler parking lot, library, and science buildings; pedestrian crossing on Duke St.; trash problems; long-term planning committee; cost-of-living increases for Mercer salary schedule; retention of students, staff and faculty; training for supervisors; possible upgrades to Dining Hall and College Center; and presentation to the Board of Directors meeting in September. Contact your council representative for more details on these issues.
The minutes of the July 14, 1998 meeting were approved as distributed.
Harry Young's report is attached for both the ACCE meeting and the Board of Director's meeting. It was MSP that a dinner be held September 15 for ACCE representatives, local legislators, and Classified Employee Council officers. It was MSP that an ad hoc committee be formed to develop presentation ideas for the Board of Directors. The committee will consist of Dan Starliper (chair), Ken Harbaugh, Cheryl Layton, Sally Urban, and Karl Wolf.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
Staff members should forward any suggestions to Johnette Jackson. A staff development request form is attached; please keep to make copies throughout the year.
Thank you to the 30 people who have made a commitment to participate in the payroll deduction program for student scholarships. The deductions will net $3228 this year. A raffle will be held during Homecoming. The tentative date for the mailing project will be August 29.
A luncheon will be held August 12th @ noon.
MENTORS FOR NEW HIRES
The proposal will be presented at the next Executive Staff meeting.
David Grove and Alan Perdue are looking into a solution.
A date will be considered by Category 4 representatives to allow as many staff members to participate as possible. A conflict with fall registration will hopefully be avoided. Tentatively, a program will be held again at the Fish & Wildlife Service, NCTC in April.
