Disability Support Services At Shepherd University
Services for Students With Disabilities
In order for any institution of higher education to provide accommodations under the American Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 you will need to supply that institution with documentation that verifies your specific disability. Usually these documents include the most frequent psychoeducational evaluation and high school IEP and/or a psychologist's evaluation. The accommodations that we provide are within the guidelines of American Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Typical classroom accommodations Shepherd University offers are:
extended time on tests |
use of tape recorders |
use of a spell checking machine |
isolation during tests |
note takers |
talking books (available at a cost to the student through the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic) |
and other accommodations as deemed appropriate and reasonable. |

Lighter course loads may be considered according to the disability. However, a letter from the student and/or your parent (for students under 18 years old) plus appropriate documentation and letter from a fully licensed Professional (i.e. psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, etc) requesting this accommodation must be submitted for consideration.
At Shepherd University a foreign language is only required for those students enrolled in a BA degree, with the exception of education majors. If you do enroll in a BA degree program requiring foreign language documentation would be needed to verify the exception.
Academic Support
Shepherd University provides a Study Center, located in Knutti Hall, Room 114, which houses the Peer Tutoring Service and Writing Center. These services are facilitated by the Office of Student Academic Support Services, and they can be reached at 304-876-5400. All tutors are students who have been nominated by a faculty member, have a 3.0 GPA in their subject area and go through a training session before being permitted to tutor. Students who tutor in the Writing Center are usually English majors and must successfully complete a course/practicum offered by the English Department. Faculty members also staff the Study Center and are available for assistance in the following areas: study and test taking skills, time management and mathematics. All services provided by the Study Center are available free of charge.
