Interlibrary Loan Policy

No library can acquire and house all information available. If the Scarborough Library does not have the material needed, the item may be available from another library through Interlibrary Loan.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service provides patrons the opportunity to borrow books, audio visual materials, and journal/periodical articles from other institutions. Please see the Scarborough Library Interlibrary Loan page to reach the ILL book, article and AV electronic submission forms and for more information about Interlibrary Loan service. Please note that ILL materials are not to be placed on Course Reserves.

Borrowing Textbooks

The Scarborough Library does not borrow textbooks for classes, obtain copies of chapters from textbooks, or borrow course required books. Interlibrary Loan is not a textbook service and should not be relied upon to fill your textbook needs. Users should not rely on Interlibrary Loan for their textbook reading or when needing extended access to course required books. The Scarborough Library has the right to decline an ILL borrowing request when it is done in lieu of purchasing a textbook or course required books. Please refer to the Shepherd University Bookstore to obtain textbooks or course required books.

Renewals for Interlibrary Loan materials

It is up to the lending institution to decide whether or not an item may be renewed. Some institutions allow renewals; others do not. If you need an item for a longer period of time, you should request a renewal BEFORE the material is due.

To request an ILL renewal:

Fines for Late, Lost or Damaged Interlibrary Loans

The Library's future borrowing privileges from other libraries are jeopardized when Shepherd University patrons do not return Interlibrary Loan materials on time.

Therefore, patrons who do not return items on time will be assessed an overdue fine of $1.00/day with no maximum limit on all past due ILL materials. Please note: Interlibrary Loan items have a four day grace period. On the fifth day, a charge of $1.00 per item per day will be calculated from the due date until the day the item is returned.

In the case of lost or damaged items, the patron will pay the replacement charge imposed by the lending institution.

If no effort is shown to return overdue Interlibrary Loans and fines remain unpaid, the Scarborough Library reserves the right to block a patron from using this service in the future.

Any questions regarding ILL policies should be directed to the ILL Coordinator's attention (x5691), not to workers on duty at the Public Services Desk.

Thank you for your consideration and complying with these policies.
