To borrow library materials patrons must go to the Public Services desk located near the main entrance of the library. Shepherd students and employees must present their Shepherd University ID (Rambler) card while other borrowers must present their Scarborough Library card.

Courtesy notices are mailed 5 days prior to the due date of a library item.


Patrons are financially responsible for items checked out on their library account and can pay fines with their Shepherd University ID (Rambler), cash, check or credit card at the Public Services desk or by phone at 304-876-5421.

Overdue Items
In order to ensure prompt return of library materials, fines are charged on overdue items.

Please note: The maximum overdue fine for all non-electronic library items (e.g. books/dvds/cds/periodicals) is $10.00 per item.

Lost or Damaged Library Materials
Patrons are responsible for the replacement cost of lost or damaged library materials. The replacement charge for all library materials is the current price of the particular item plus an additional $15.00 processing fee. If a lost or damaged non-electronic library item (e.g. books/dvds/cds/periodicals) is no longer available for purchase, a flat fee of $40.00 ($25.00 plus $15.00 processing fee) will be charged.

Suspension of Library Privileges
Students with unpaid library fines in excess of $5.00 and/or overdue items are prohibited from further borrowing. Registration for classes is blocked and transcripts will not be released until all financial obligations are met.

Once the student has returned all overdue items and paid all outstanding library fines and fees, the library will release all holds. Students should allow one business day for release of a hold after all fines and fees have been paid.


To renew items before the due date patrons may go to their library account online at My Library Account.

To renew items that have reached or exceeded the due date, patrons must contact the Public Services desk during normal operating hours either in person or by phone at 304-876-5421. Overdue fines in excess of $5.00 must be paid before any item can be renewed.


Library items may be returned to the Public Services desk or deposited in the outside book drop when the building is closed. An additional book drop is located on the West Campus in front of Thacher Hall. The Thacher Hall drop is checked at least once a week and all returned items will be back-dated to the last time the drop was checked, so there will be no overdue fines resulting from fewer checks of the West Campus drop.

Recall and Hold Requests

Patrons may place a recall or hold on an item that is checked out to another patron. Patrons will receive an email notifying them that the recall and hold library item can be picked up at the Public Services desk.

When a recall is placed on a library item, the patron who has the item will be notified to return it after they have had it in their possession for a minimum of 10 days or the remainder of their loan period (whichever is shorter). Patrons who receive a recall notice must return the item to the Public Services desk by the adjusted due date to avoid a fine. Overdue recall fines are $.50 per day.

If a hold is placed on a library item, the patron who has the item will not be able to renew the library item.

To recall or hold a library item:
1. Search the library catalog for the item you wish to recall or hold
2. Click on the title of the item you want.
3. Click on “Make a Request” to the right of the screen under “Actions”.
4. Enter your login information.
5. Click on “Recall” (to receive an item in 10 days) or “Hold” (to receive an item when the item is returned)
6. Enter your patron I.D. number.
7. Click the “Submit” button.
