SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — The Shepherd University chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity is postponing the 2nd annual Watermelon Bust Food Drive event that was scheduled for Saturday, October 3, due to predicted inclement weather. The fraternity is also cancelling the weeklong food drive leading up to the event and will reschedule both at a later date.

The Shepherd University chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity is hoping to raise 10,000 pounds of food and have a little fun doing it during the 2nd annual Watermelon Bust Food Drive. The fraternity is collecting food all this week, but the main event will take place on Saturday, October 3, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on the Midway next to the Student Center.

Lambda Chi President Andrew Potts said the chapter hopes the event will attract 250 participants who will try their skills at watermelon bowling, shot put, toss, an obstacle course, eating contest, and more. The entry fee to sign up is 10 cans of food or $10 and anyone from the campus or surrounding community can take part.

One of Lambda Chi Alpha’s goals is ending hunger across America. The food and money raised will be donated to the Mountaineer Food Bank which serves 48 counties in West Virginia. In the 2014-2015 academic year, Lambda Chi Alpha chapters nationwide collected more than 3.6 million pounds of food that was donated to food banks in the Feeding America network.
