SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV — Shepherd University’s Department of Contemporary Art and Theater will open the exhibition Two Kinds of Funny and host a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, October 14 in the Phaze 2 Gallery in the new Center for Contemporary Art.
Two Kinds of Funny is a nationally curated exhibition of sculptures that present the specific ability of visual materials to communicate humor, sarcasm, and awkward peculiarity. These works illustrate that the construction of comedy, jokes, puns, and one-liners can be a serious endeavor.
Extremely diverse in materials and aesthetic sensibilities, the work in the show is unified by predefined size and shipping constraints. All sculptures are shipped to the gallery inside a 1-cubic-foot standard moving box, further adding to the artists’ ability to be playful with a purposefully undermined scale.
Also, that evening Kristin Kaineg, associate professor of graphic design at Shepherd, will present “Building the Experience and the Artifacts” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Marinoff Theater in the Center for Contemporary Arts II.
This event is in conjunction with the Faculty Research Forum, a monthly lecture series implemented by the faculty and designed to highlight the current scholarship of Shepherd University faculty members.
