FAQ

What is the JHWGA?

The Academy is a one-week residential, pre-college program intended to encourage 7th graders who are going into the 8th grade to think about, plan, and prepare for college. The program is held in June on the campus of Shepherd University and is designed for underachievers who are performing between the average and high academic performance range.

What does the Academy do?

Through activities and mini-classes, Academy participants receive instruction and information on the benefits of a college education. The program is designed to change learning habits, improve grades in school, and increase the possibility for college attendance.

When/Where is the Academy?

The Academy will be held June 22 to June 28, 2008  at Shepherd University. The University is located in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia in Shepherdstown. The Academy is coordinated by the College’s Career Development Center.

Why Gateway?

Research reveals that: (a) West Virginia has one of the lowest going-to-college rates in the nation; (b) approximately 80 percent of all new jobs in the future will require at least two years of college; c) underachieving students who do not perform to their ability level are less likely to attain the same occupational and educational level of achievers with the same ability.

How much does the Academy cost?

It is FREE. The Gateway Academy is specially funded by Shepherd University as a program to increase the state's going-to-college rate.
Participants and their parents must handle the cost of transportation to and from Shepherdstown and spending money. Spending money is not required.
